As I read this, I will admit to wondering if you have for some reason rejected the idea of simply asking the client and/or explaining your concerns to them?

Everyone - GA shows organic and PPC separated only if this has been properly set up. I thought about the idea of manually going through the landing pages and see if anything suspicious turns up (such as &medium=x....).

Why not just use the Google AdWords ad preview tool - [adwords.google.com...] - and check the keywords & countries where he would logically be advertising.
The tool should show you his ads if he is in fact running a program.
