this may be super old...

but i am noticing a 4th line in google adwords.

in my case, its the state i live in.

Title
Copy line
Copy line
display URL
state

some have them, some dont....

what is that...? is it just a note to the user that this company actually resides in the state?

The "state" line is an indicator of geo-targeting within AdWords. The ads you're seeing with your state on the bottom are geo-targeting their campaigns for your state.

Your ad is locally targeted. When Google displays your locally targeted ad, the ad includes the name of the targeted city or region (whichever is more specific). This lets users in your targeted locations know that your product or service is especially relevant to them, helping you reach more qualified users.

I'd like to add just a bit to what IndianGuardian wrote - and have done so in italics below:

Your ad is locally targeted. When Google displays your locally targeted ad, the ad includes the name of the targeted city or region to those who are identified by IP as being in that city or region.

This is mentioned in the page referenced by IndianGuardian, but I thought I'd add it here for those who don't care to follow links.
