I created an adwords account and added credit card into it. Do I have to pay $5 activation charge only for this? Or will I be charged when I start an ad campaign?

I got a promotional code from google, can't I use it without paying activation fee? I mean I'll be happy even if i get 95$ but I don't want to be charged $5 out of my bank account? Can that be done?

You will be charged the $5 activation fee. I don't remember if it comes out of your account or the voucher, but - it's $5. No, you can't redeem the coupon without adding a credit card.

It sounds like you've already added the credit card to it, but as you have added the promo code, it will use this credit before charging your card for additional adspend. The activation may be taken form the promo as there is nothing on the promo FAQ's page about it.

You can set it so that the campaign finishes before you hit the spend where you're card would be charged.
