A couple of days ago I was researching a set of keywords using the Google Keyword suggestion tool. I had to leave it for a couple of days but now I've come back to it, half the words/phrases Google gave me before aren't in there.

Every search I've done today has yielded far less suggestions, broad matches etc. than last week. Do they empty their database periodically and start all over again?

I haven't ever noticed this yet it definitely is possible. Are you sure you weren't searching in a different format?
Or it could be that they tweaked the searching algo to show more relevant topic keywords to keep from people having unsuccessful, untargetted campaigns.
Just an idea.

The keyword tool is fubared since this morning. I typed in a top 10 "search term" semi related to my industry in both the 'keyword tool' and the find alternatives selection (same thing different display I am sure) and it said it found 'no matches'

I tried this on about 30 other search terms and it said the same thing.

Internetheaven, no, the database is not emptied and re-started, so this sounds like a glitch of some sort.

I alerted the tech team awhile ago - will post again when I know more.

Sorry about that. :(

Internetheaven, no, the database is not emptied and re-started,

I'd really like to know more about how keywords are added/retained/dropped/ordered - has Google released an article on this?
