I recently changed my ad up after a successful split test and increase the CTR by about 1%

But after reading a few places about how different ads can produce different impacts on your landing page CR... Its got me a little concerned.

can the ad you write in adwords really have an effect on the conversion rate of your LANDING page?

And if so...

How would I go about testing such a thing?

can the ad you write in adwords really have an effect on the conversion rate of your LANDING page?

It can, by the means of how much it matches what you have on the landing page and the whole conversion process.

In practice, if you have two ads that are identical except:

1. Free product
2. Free product. Shipping $5

...and your landing page is better matching 2. (because you do send something for free, but charge $5 for shipping), you can expect the difference in conversion between the people that click onto ad 1 vs. people that click onto ad 2.

I maybe haven't picked the best possible example, but it should be good enough, eh?

In other words, if people find what they expected based on:

1. Their search,
2. What your ad said, and
3. What your landing page said.

You should expect better conversion.
