So, it's really good to see the status of new ads (in the new interface).
But, how about premium area (yellow one), or however is that described?

To me, it looks like that part is missing as ads are not getting there even with approved status, but they show on a side.

This means that approved does not mean "approved for a premium area"

This is the behavior I've observed with my ads:

Under Review - does not show at all
Pending Review - can appear on right side only
Approved - can appear on top also

I haven't had an Approved ad that did not appear on top for a keyword when the bid was high enough.

Thanks for sharing that.

I just saw it in the top area. So, it turned that it did need some time to get into the "yellow".
Why? Could be that an additional review from live person was needed, or some kind of auto-test before it gets green light.
Who knows... except Google. ;)

The yellow isn't guaranteed, and once there, there's no guarantee you'll always be there. I routinely see my ads show up on the side, even when they're *mostly* in the yellow. Go look at your Analytics ad position numbers. Google is always testing ads in different positions.

(I don't think there's a status for "approved for #1 listing or yellow box" either)

In regards to placement in the 'yellow' area:

The very short story is that ads must be approved and then meet a Quality Score and CPC bid threshold to be sent 'up top'. If no ads meet that threshold, then none are shown above the search results.

More info here:

Can I make my ads appear above search results?

Once on that page, be sure to note the two 'plus boxes' that lead to additional information.
