Back ground to question:
Our company has one website in which we wish to attract people to sign up for our newsletter and create leads for us.
However each individual wishes to run their own Adwords campaign and manage there own budget.

The question:
Can I track which names that signed up for the newsletter came from which Adwords campaign? This is so that each individual will get the leads they paid for from their own campaign.

If so how? (in as much detail as possible please, thanks)

This is how its normally done:

The individual's need to have personalised links to the website. eg:

http://www.thewebsite.com/thisproduct.asp?user=xyz

The website will need to be programmed to grab this user information as soon as it appears and store this in a cookie.

When it comes to the sale, the website can get the user information stored in the cookie.

thanks for you reply.

So, (bear with me)is this correct:

I need a unique link for every individuals campaign..
I then track back which people signed up for the newsletter by tracing there steps back to the original link they started on? And that way I know which campaign and therefore individual this prospect/lead should go to.

Is that what googles Conversion Tracker does? Does it trace the steps of those visiting the site.. and therefore I could use this tool to follow the sale back to the unique links?

Ok, having reflected.. I guess all I need to do once I have created unique links for each campaign, is:

Create a form field for the newsletter which automatically saves that persons IP address. Is this possible? if so how?

Secondly - get some free web statistics software that can track which IP's visited which unique starter pages. Do you know of any that can do this?

thanks

No. You shouldn’t track via IP addresses, as IP address change and groups of users often share IP addresses.

Use a cookie to track the sale back to the user ID. Yes, this is simular to how conversion tracker works.

Not sure what you want to do with statistics software, but you can do most things including tracking affiliates by using Google analytics.
