My AdWords account had been running for a long time and the quality scores are excellent. I'm working on integrating with the AdWords API and I'd like to set up a new campaign for this and phase out the old, currently-running campaign. Am I putting myself at a disadvantage by doing this because I won't have an established history with the new campaign?

I myself mostly don't worry too much about it when my quality scores are excellent.
The only thing that holds me back from porting elements from old campaigns into new campaigns is that sometimes there's a very noticeable lag time in ramping up, even if QS is excellent, CTR high, and all that. Very aggravating.

why can't you use the old campaign with the api?

Thanks netmeg. Ogletree, for me it's about starting fresh. In case it helps someone, the number after the "#c." in the campaign URL seems to be the campaign ID for the API.

I see that huge lag too, up to 2-3 weeks in some cases. Has this been your experience too netmeg?

I've gone as long as a week - that's long enough. If it went to two or three, you'd hear me screaming half the world over.

Tonearm, I too like the fresh starts, but at times it isn't worth the lag time that you have to experience as mentioned by netmeg and thecloser.
In your case, I would change campaigns as a last resort.

A week isn't a big deal though. And I can keep my old campaign running until the new one gets up to speed. I'll have duplicate keyword issues while the two are running together, but that won't last long.

A week is a *huge* deal to me, and to my clients.

thats really huge...however, if running old campaign can be done then there should be no issues.

I guess I'm used to organic Google time. As I'm sure you know, a week is lightning fast on that scale.
