Keyword Destination URL and Text Ad URL Mismatch

If these two URLs don't match, will the ad be displayed?

Got a notice from a client that they clicked on one of their ads and were taking to the wrong site. Come to find that five Keywords in one group had the wrong Destination URL.

The Default URL for the group was:

http://www.example.com

But somehow these fives keywords had the Destination URL set to:

[different-example.com...]

Now here is where it gets interesting. The Display URL for each ad is set to http://www.example.com, which, of course, matches the correct top level domain.

My understanding is that if the Display URL and the Destination URL, whether the system uses the one set by the Keyword or the Ad Text, *must* match. Otherwise the ad won't be displayed.

However, the client swears that they clicked the ad and went to the wrong site.

Furthermore, I have run every single report available, and I find not one instance that any ad was redirected to the incorrect domain.

Could this mean that, in the instance that someone did go to the wrong site, Google counted it as an invalid click?

[edit reason] Use example.com, please; it can never be owned. [/edit]

My apologies on the summary. I don't mean if the URLs don't match, but rather if the TDLs don't match.
