Difference in average position and real position

Ads not appearing in the position shown

I have been working on a client's project for about a month now and recently started a fresh campaign with some very tightly clustered ad groups. But there's a strange issue that I have observed in the last one week I have run the campaign.

My campaign is targeted only to show up in US and the keywords are mostly of phrase match type. Average position shown for, say one of my keyword "blue widget" is 8.2 However, every time I have checked the real search page it shows up at 2nd or 3rd or a maximum low of 4th position.

Moreover, even after quite a number of impressions no clicks have been registered. What could possibly have caused this? I have used the same keyword before in another campaign for the same client and it worked fine, that old campaign is paused now.

Can someone please throw some light or a wayout?

ranadeep, please know that your 'avg. pos' statistics are not estimates. They are an exact mathematical reporting of the average of all your actual positions found by adding up the actual position for each and every impression then dividing by the number of impressions.

When you are comparing the position you see to your stats, please be sure you are looking at the stats for a date range such as 'yesterday' rather than 'all time'.

I'd also strongly suggest that you do not look for your ad by searching on google.com. Instead, I'd suggest the Ad Preview tool.

More information about this tool may be found on this page from the AdWords Help Center:

What is the Ad Preview tool?
[adwords.google.com...]

Quoting from that page, but minus multiple links:

The Ad Preview tool enables you to view ads and search results as they would appear on a regular Google search results page, without accruing extra impressions for your ad. We suggest you view your ad through the Ad Preview tool, since searching for your ad multiple times could change the position in which you see your ad on the actual Google search result page.

To perform a test search with the Ad Preview tool, follow these steps:

1. Go to [google.com...]
2. Enter a keyword.
3. Enter a Google domain, such as google.com or google.fr.
4. Select a display language.
5. Select a location. You can choose a location from the drop-down menus, or you can enter specific latitude and longitude coordinates.
6. Click Preview ads.

The search results and ads appear as they would on Google, except the links on the preview page aren't clickable.

This feature is also available for mobile ads.

I failed to speak to this part of your post earlier, ranadeep.

I have to say I am not certain what would explain the difference between the previous ad group and the current one without a look at the actual ad groups. However, I did speak to a general principle behind what it typically means when one is getting impressions but no clicks, in another WebmasterWorld thread, here:

No Clicks Receiving From Adwords
[webmasterworld.com...]

Bottom line, while you mention having used the same keyword before, the 'new' ad is most likely different - and the ad can easily make all the difference between lots of clicks, and no clicks at all.
