I'm new and keep getting the "no ad is being shown for the keyword..."

Q: What should I do to ensure that an ad IS shown for a particular or all keywords?

1. Check that there are ads available for that keyword; some niches really don't get a lot of ads.

2. Check that your page is a G-compliant, quality page with a good amount of relevant content.

3. Don't use frames or i-frames (unless you are familiar with their potential problems, and can avoid them).

4. Check your page on another unrelated computer.

5. Have an alternative ready in case there are no ads.

6. er ....

6. Consider using other keywords / phrases

I knew there was something else! ;)

I'll go with point 6. As an AdWords newbie I have found that you need to play around with key words and phrases to find what works best.
