Gooble Adwords Negative keyword option?

I have posted on Adwords forums but no answer.

I need to get this done:

For example I have 2 sets of keywords:

translation services
translation companies

I want them to show up together but I don't want clicks for:

company by itself
translation by itself
services by itself

I understand that negative keywords can acheive that with the - suffix in front but am not clear on how to do it...

[translation services]

in the adgroup...

Will this still work with the " " and [ ]
