Unintended search query triggers my ad to display

I am targeting two keyword combos, but searching on just one triggers my ad

Let's say for example that I sell widgets that are manufactured by Widgetcompany and Widgetcompany makes a model XR-1000, model XR-2000 and model XR-3000.

Well, I have an adgroup that includes the following keyphrases:
Widgetcompany XR-1000
Widgetcompany XR-2000
Widgetcompany XR-3000

And, I also have this keyphrase:
Widgetcompany XR

Anyway, if I go to Google and search for just "Widgetcompany", my ad displays. Is this normal behavior?

Also, a long time ago I did target just "Widgetcompany", but I have verifyied that that keyword is not currently active (it hasn't been active for atleast a year or more).

Hey budbiss, what are the match types of the keywords you referenced?

All of the keywords are using broadmatch.

Broad match will display your ad anytime some searches for ANY word in the keyword phrase. So your ad may display for:
Widgetcompany XR-1000
Widgetcompany XR-2000
Widgetcompany XR-3000
Widgetcompany
XR-1000
XR-2000
XR-3000

And, because of expanded broad match, your ad may display for relevant (more likely irrelevant) searches that Google deems similar to your keyword phrases.

If you ONLY want your ad displayed for exact keyword phrase you're buying, then change match type to exact.

Here's more info about match types: [adwords.google.com...]

And how expanded match works: [adwords.google.com...]

FYI -- you should also consider creating unique ad group for each model type so you can write more targeted ads to heal increase quality scores.

thats not exactly how broadmatch works
the reason it showed was either because exanded match was enabled
or google used the previous search query to help target the ads
(ive read about this and seen it on my own accounts)

so if i search for birds and then oklahoma
sometimes it will show ads targeted to the broad match oklahoma birds
