No competition for exact match company name search.

Ad dropped and hit with minimum bid anyway?

I have several competitors targeted with exact match search strings for company name. I've been hit with a minimum bid on a couple of them. Okay - no problem, they have not been generating click through.

Bad - because I am a full line supplier of this brand and they are partial line suppliers that do pretty well with the brand. But good - because the ads are targeted to the brand, so the customers see what I am pitching, it's not for them, and it doesn't cost me a click to get the ad view for the brand.

One of the companies is a much bigger target than I would have guessed. Even for the exact match full name, there is a fair bit of competition. Not worth it to me to pay what Google wants so they are out, and I understand completely. For me, simply too much money to invest for just a click opportunity. Conversion rates have been good- but not that good to torch all of those dollar bills.

The other one has me stymied though. Exact match or open match, there are no ads showing. None. I am the only person on earth that his an interest in this company with AdWords. Okay, I haven't gotten the clicks, so no loss to me, and the clicks and conversions that I had been hoping for aren't working out (which I will have to look at) - but why would Google hit me with a big minimum bid when they are running no ads? Neither of us was making or losing, so I don't understand. Is it just automatic that if the click-through drops below a certain percentage you're out?

D_Blackwell, it's really important to know that the minimum bid for a keyword is not at all related to how many competitors an advertiser has for the keyword. Instead, it's entirely based on the Quality Score of the keyword as it is used in the advertiser's account.

Also, it's worth noting that when you discover a keyword for which there are no (or very few) competitors, it ordinarily does not mean that no one has thought to use that keyword. Instead, it typically means that advertisers who have used it in the past have found it difficult to keep it running affordably - and have stopped using it.
