sites with great serps & adwords

why pay for it when you have great rankings?

I see a lot of sites that rank in the top 10 for highly competitive phrases also have their adwords ads (for the same keyword) show up as well on the same page.

why would they pay for a keyword(s) if they already rank well for it?

could it be a matter of trust that if someone searching for something sees the ad and thinks the site is more reliable than the organic listing even though its the same site?

Real estate, location location location. If the keywords aren't too expensive, I don't mind taking over a higher percentage of the page with a high organic *and* a paid ad. It also (I believe) does tend to lend a patina of authority to the advertiser if he shows up well in both organics and ad space.

I guess the best answer to your question would be to ask why they wouldn't use Adwords if the ROI is positive just because they also get traffic from the SERPs?
