High rate of return visitors come to my site via adwords
Is this normal?

According to google analytics only 45% of my visitors coming from google (cost per click) are "new visits." This seems strange that 55% of the clicks have already been to my site. Is that normal? My domain is short and memorable so i don't think it would be to hard to type-in my domain if you've already been to the site. Any thoughts?

I'd say this is normal. It's they way peoples' brains work causing it - they tend to use the same techniques for finding what they want. I get multiple visitors daily that have typed the whole domain name into a search engine, rather than directly into the address bar. It seems weird to me that you'd do that, but I've been using the net for a long time. At the place I work I've watched how all the other staff use their web browsers, and some of the ways they achieve things are truly bizarre. Some of them don't even know what "favourites" are and almost all will use a search engine to get to sites' they've previously visited. Back on your question, presumably your Adwords campaign continually targets the same keywords, so the users get used to finding you that way. The way to try and fix this will be to try and encourage users to bookmark.

I've always noticed the same thing... Putting the biz name in the search. Continually clicking through other sites to get to mine. The weirdest one is the typing out of the whole address and putting in search. That's happens often. You gotta wonder what the heck is going on with those people... How can you not know how to open an address in a browser. I mean the field is right there in front of you. But that's what has always worried me about pay per click... How many geniuses who find your site that way one time, just keep coming back time after time using that same weird path.

I think people might get confused with the search field of various toolbars they might use, especially if they are not experienced users.

one of the highest searched terms on google is 'ebay'... you'd think people would remember that domain too but many (me included sometimes) use google to navigate to websites.
i don't click on paid ads in that case though, only on organic listings. but given that half the people using Google don't know the difference i'm not surprised you're getting so much repeat business via adwords.
