Just curious, b/c it's one of the few AdWords features that I haven't used before.

Prefered cost bidding? Do you mean, prefered ad positioning?

I tend not to use it but I have wondered how it might help CTR. For instance if you had an average position of 1.5 and knew you got a significantly better CTR in position 1 then 2.

You could setup ad preference to 1, thereby saving you any impressions on slot 2 and increasing your overall CTR, thus decreasing your minimum bid.

If you log in to AdWords and click on "Edit Settings" for a campaign, you will see in the bottom left an option for editing your bidding options. When you click on that, there are a few options to choose from, one of which is called Preferred Cost Bidding.

Now, I vaguely remember this feature being discussed in the AdWords learning center tutorials, but I never paid much attention to it. From what it seems like, I believe you set a preferred cost per click as opposed to a maximum cost per click. Is this the same thing as preferred ad positioning you mentioned?

preferred cost bidding -
this is where u set an avg cpc tht u'd want!so the google modifies the amount u sped per click (more/less than your preferred bid) so that finally your avg cpc for those many clicks comes down to your preferred bid.
it's a good option if you want to attain your cpc targets without really caring much about other factors..but then again, its an automated feature!
