AdWords Targeting by Zipcode

how granular can you get?

I've been setting up an AdWords campaign where I need to target specific zip codes. In the targeting section of AdWords campaign settings, when I type in a zip code to target, it shows a region that is larger than just that zip code. What is the best way to target specific zip codes as opposed to an entire DMA? For example, I'd like to target only the zip code 22124 instead of a large part Northern Virginia outside of suburban DC.

Thanks for any insight on this.

You can use custom targetting setting to target areas as small as 5km radius, but this is the absolute minimum and it is often inaccurate since a visitor's I.P. address is not always an accurate way to pinpoint someone's location.

Yeah, for however nifty it sounds targeting ZIPs by IP is virtually impossible. And in your particular case, depending on exactly how G handles stuff on the backend, you could be targeting every AOL user regardless of their actual locations.

I posted a request in adwords features about allowing you to import large numbers of zip codes via an excel spreadsheet but never got a reply. Would make it extremely targeted and fast to upload via excel.
