Same ad, same keywords, same landing page, different minimum bids

I'm stumped on this one

I just created a new ad group containing 100 keywords. All the keywords are "widget small something". The phrase "widget small" is used in every 3 word phrase. I also included "widget small" as broad, phrase, and exact match.

Since I'm using DKI (dynamic keyword insertion) for the above ad group, I figured it might make more sense to break-out "widget small" into its own ad group so I can add a more descriptive word to the title (specifially, widget small news). I go to do that and the minimum bid is now $1 instead of $.50. This is about 1 minute after creating the 100 keyword ad group.

I play with the ad copy and change it back to the DKI copy and it is still coming up as $1 minimum bid for the three variants of "widget small".

So to sum up, we have the same keywords getting $.50 minimum bid in one ad group that has 100 keywords, while getting $1 minimum bid when they are seperated out for better targeting. Both ad groups are brand new, with the same ad copy, and same landing page.

Is there something I'm missing? Does this make sense?

Sit and wait. I see Google as evolving thing, not as hard coded calculator.
If it really stays like that, you may want to give them a call and ask about it.

Strangely enough those three variants are now at $1.00 minimum bid in the large ad group.

So I went and did what I was planning and broke those out. I set them up in a new ad group and I bid what Google recommended to get the top spot (I never do that). Immediately after set-up, the minimum bid dropped to $.10

At least from this example, it seems Google rewards bidding high with a new ad group. Has anyone else seen that?

Let me add something:

1) Your bid is a part of your quality score.
2) Your actual CPC is a part of your quality score.

Just for FYI.

I always thought it was Quality Score x bid.

Strange that your bid price would be a part of your QS...would almost seem like you can buy quality.
