There seem to be certain words, that if they appear in the search term, void the regular search term.
Vertical Market = Large volume vertical search that has 25+ advertisers paying upto $10+ (and several of them are using broad and phrase match and show for phrases I'm certain aren't in their keyword list).
Widget = Small specific industry term related to another industry with low volume, 8-20 advertisers, people using broad/phrase match.
If I search for 'vertical market widget', then only ads for the widget industry are shown, and none for the vertical market.
It seems that there is a trump filter that if certain keywords appear, then Google assumes its not related to the Vertical Market, and shows ads only for the widget market.
The odd part was there are a few markets, where the Widget market didn't trump the Vertical market - and 0 ads were shown. On these queries, it use to be that Google would show ads from both markets as the search term triggered keywords from both sets of advertisers. Now, there is a whole host of keyword phrases that have 0 ads appearing for thes searches - and one set of ads is relevant to the search in question.
This has nothing todo with daily budget, some of these terms have phrase match CTRs of 10%+ and are shown for broad matches, so it's not related to the broad match becoming exact match, etc.
It's some sort of keyword set filtering system. Anyone heard anything about this or have an idea what's going on?
Google has identified several industries where each industry was assigned a ranking number.
If your search is a term, which has keywords or phrases coming from two of these industries, the result will be:
1. One of the industries which has a higher ranking will be dominated the results if these industries are related,
2. If these industries are unrelated or remotely related, none of the industries will show up.
3. The ads showed in the results are the “true” broad match*. There are very few true broad matches these days for each industry. This is a reason why there are some no-shows even the industries are related.
*One of my keywords which has 10K+ impressions with CTR of 3-4 but it hasn't been qualified as a true broad match. It's a broad match for certain terms but not all terms.
