Hi,

A client of mine got an email from a seo/webdesign company claiming that they can lower our cpc from say 1.50 a click to say 30 cents a click for certain keyword phrases related to his business. From what I understand is that when you are targeting a certain phrase and bid on it and the cost to show up in the first 1-3 positions is say 1.50 then thats what it will cost per click, decreasing the amount will get you a lower position in the sponsored listings and for less. how is it that they can claim they will do it for less per click if the most popular phrase that i am targeting costs say 1.50? for the top 3 positions.

Thanks
Htdawg

It is certainly possible to maintain or even improve position while reducing CPCs. It's part of a virtuous cycle that can result from optimizing Quality Score.

That said, I think it's correct to be skeptical of such email template sales pitches. Promising reductions of 80% in CPC without a thorough examination of your current campaigns is a reckless claim.

Just by having a landing page which is well focused and has good signals of quality (privacy policy, no request for contact details, contact details for site...) and then only using closely matching keywords to that page you will cut your bids massively. Then, if you increase your CTR by writing better copy, your bids go even lower. Very possible.
