Has anyone had any luck automating AdWords marketing with the API? I'd like to connect my product database to AdWords in an automated way like that, but I'd hate to spend the time setting it up if it won't be profitable. Anybody tried this?

Plenty of people have succeeded in doing this. Whether it is possible or not in your case really depends on what type of products you have and what your margin is.

Alright, I'd like to automate AdWords marketing as much as possible since doing it by hand seems prohibitive to me. I think I'll give this a try. Any advice or warnings from a marketing perspective from anyone who has set this up?

Depending on how many ad groups / keywords you have, the API cost can be a bit prohibitive. I went the route of exporting text files that can be imported into the Adwords Editor instead.

you_store,
Very good to know. So Google charges you to use their API? Can you tell me what the costs are?

Every action costs a certain amount of "API Units". G will give you a certain amount depending on your current spend, but it's never been enough for me.
After you've used up your freebies, you buy blocks of 1000 units.
Have a look at [google.com...] to get an idea of the costs.
