Are there any methods for preventing competitors from bidding on our brand/trademarked terms?

Contact them and ask then not to, have a lawyer send a letter, send a letter that looks like it came from a lawyer. They may not be doing it intentionally. They could be bidding on their own brand terms on broad match and then the Google algo is broadmatching out to your brand terms.

NO NO NO don't waste money on a lawyer!

Contact GOOGLE. Tell them you have an issue with someone using your trademark.

All you have to do is submit paperwork that proves you own the trademark, and that's it......suddenly, all your competitors ads will be rejected for "containing a trademarked term."

I know because not only have I prevented others from using our trademark, others have prevented us from using their's.

DON'T WASTE MONEY ON A LAWYER, you don't need to!

No.

You can stop them from displaying your trademark in their ads, but not from bidding on them.

Let's say the term is YourTradeMark. You can stop someone from having an ad that says "Get YourTradeMark here...". But an ad that says "Get some service here" will be allowed by Google

Good point...I wasn't really clear on that.

Google will let anyone bid on any term. Period.

You cannot prevent others from bidding on your trademark. You CAN prevent them from using whatever word or words in their ad copy.

My standard response to this kind of thing is to write a killer ad, leaving no doubt that we're the real enchilada, and the buyer is much better off coming to us (don't be fooled by substitutes, etc)

Here's some info from the AdWords Help Center for those who are intersted in digging into it:
