I've been playing with AdWords for a few years and I've never done the type of constant optimization that I've read about some people doing. I can get all sorts of details about what's happening on my system these days (search keywords used to find my site, etc.) and I'm wondering if I should be taking part in this constant optimization. How are you guys optimizing?

Start A/B testing. That will (hopefully) result in higher CTR and lower CPC. More traffic for less money.

I also think you have to be careful not to over tweak your ads. You need to allow enough data to accumulate in order to see if your last set of changes was effective.

What about examining referrer keywords and adding negative AdWords keywords based on that? Has anyone found that effective?

BradleyT,

You mean A/B testing ads?

I do that all the time. We also review the searches that customers do with our built in search to make sure that what WE call the products is close or the same as what the visitors think they're called. It can be an eye opener.
