Phrase Matching with Long Tail

What would be the outcome of chasing longer tail terms when you are already covering part of that term?

For example :

"Blue Widgets Large"

when you already cover

"Blue Widgets"

If a searcher keys in the longer tail term will they get the ad that is associated with my longer term? Will I be able to pay less CPC when the longer tail term is searched?

Many Thanks.

Initially you may find you will be paying more for the longer tail term until that new term picks up a bit of CTR history and then it should help you obtain that term cheaper.
One other option is to create a new add group for the longer tail term and aim your adds specifically at this new term.

Thanks for that.

In a lot of cases I have done that - just wondered whether Adwords would always go for the closest match or the one that'll earn them the most!?
