So it seems that although companies cannot have the same domain listed twice on a website, Google can...

[google.com...]

you will probably have to refresh a few times before you see it.

what you should see is an ad for earth.google.com and maps.google.com

no, sub domains are considered the same:

[adwords.google.com...]

I checked into this, and it was a case of human error - now corrected (as soon as all servers update, that is).
