strange observation

Hi,
a friend of mine and I are running two seperate campaigns on two seperate accounts, where we bid on the same keywords.

We have made some strange observations regarding the matching types.
Say the keyword in question is red widget.

Observations:
1. the two of us are the only two ads that appear when searching for red widget. There are other advertisers who would certainly bid for the term widget broad match, but they don't show up.
2. my friends bids on the term red widgets (plural) as well, whereas I only bid for red widget, broad match. When searching for red widgets my friends ad is the only one to show, mine doesn't come up.

This goes against pretty much everything I have read about the broad match option for adwords, including the explanation on the Google Adwords site itself.

Has anyone made similar observations or is there an explanation for this? Needless to say that the red widget search term is quite specific, but the term widget itself is not. Red widget only consists of 2 keywords and receives several 100 impressions a day on the Google search network.

i would imagine if your friends only shows up for Red Widgets and yours doesnt show up even though your using broad.. google has deemed plural and singler to be seperate words and not part of the broad

I think yours would show up for like

Red Widget Otherwordhere

but not for

Red Widgets

yeah but shouldn't google match plural and singular for broad match?

also doesn't explain why other competitors that broad match for widget don't show up
