Going to take a stab at it ...

I'm going to take a stab at the Content network. I'll be analyzing referrers, etc. so I can block sites that don't send converting traffic. Anyway, just a few questions before I get started I'm hoping you guys and gals can help with.

1. Does the QS apply to ads running on the Content network? i.e. will I take a hit if my ads don't include the right keywords etc?

2. I assume Google uses a pretty broad matching algorithm for the Content network. Why else would there be so many untargeted ads on pages running AdSense. Anyway my question is, when setting up campaigns to run on the Content network, is it enough to just list a handful of "top level" broad match keywords? I can't see any point in having 100s or 1000s of long tail keywords, exact matches, etc. like you would generally do with ads running on Google.

Thanks!

1. Yes, there is a QS for Content also now. Not sure , how often it is updated though.

2. I think you are right. But, I do feel it makes sense to add as many relevant keywords possible to get the ads to show on the ' Right ' sites.

My experience says that it will take quite a while for the algo to find the right sites from where you will get decent traffic. So you need to show patience. Bid low on the content network. I typically bid 50% of the search bids. I also put a decently high budget to stimulate maximum impressions and also use the 'accelarated' option.

In addition to your 2 questions... the biggest problem we found with the Content Network is website selection.
We have been checking referrers from the content network and have been excluding websites we did not want...
... but we found out that "new" website we did not want would show up every week, and they did not convert at all... so we exclude them .... and new show up, again and again, until we stopped most of our campaigns.

One thing you could do is let it run awhile and analyze your conversions for each site. Make a list of all the ones you DO want traffic from and then setup a site targeted campaign targeting only those sites.

If I am not mistaken right now in the Content Network you can only select which websites you want to exclude, but you cannot limit your ads to certain websites only.

That's true if you're talking about CPC (contextual) ads. However, site-targeted CPM ads are an option.

Also, Google has indicated that site-targeted contextual ads will be introduced in the not-too-distant future.

That will be the day we resume our ads on the Content Network.
