Following a hit in my access log, I noticed that Adwords are appearing on Google Groups, even when the user doesn't search for a particular keyword, i.e. just browsing through a newsgroup.
Since the user hasn't entered a search query, how are the ad keywords chosen? I hadn't placed a bid on any word that appeared as part of the newsgroup title, but the subject was definitely related.
Any info on this would be interesting (even if it's just a pointer to something I've missed in the online docs).
All the best,
Andy.
It does seem to be as windsun says - related to the topic of the group
The main idea behind all this is to test ways to display ads on CONTENT pages. That is, your ads will be displayed when a page contains content related to them. Ads are displayed in the same order seen on search results pages, as determined by your cost-per-click and clickthrough rate.
Actually, Google says that clicks/impressions collected during the testing period will not be displayed in the stats. I bet the testers are looking at the results closely and tweaking their "content matching" program.
hmm.. what next? AdWords ads in Google news?
why not?
Shak
why not?
Clickthrough Rate.
I bet CTR will be a lot lower than those from search results.
Maybe they should NOT count the number of impressions collected in the final release too. Charging for clicks would be okay. But whole reporting system goes for a spin if you count only the clicks and not the impressions.
Ideally, advertisers should get an option of choosing whether they'd like their ads to be seen in content pages like Groups/News.
Actually, that makes sense..
I went and looked at several groups, and it seems like it is getting all or most of it's information on what ads to post directly from the text of the messages.
One group in particular that I keep up with has been changing ads over time, as the major discussion topics change.
