In brief, it enables experimentation to take place using various landing page variations to discover what works best in terms of converting visitors to the landing page to a specified page (eg: the page where they enter their credit card details!).
Not of use to those of us who don't have conversions (eg pure data sites), but potentially very useful to e-shops.

Think laterally. Say you run an information site monetized with AdSense. In that case, getting your users to view twice as many pages of text might be just as valuable.
With Website Optmizer, you could split test how changes in navigation or cross-sells help make your site more or less sticky.
