Our PPC campaigns are gorwing to the point where we need some help managing them and are considering tools such as Omniture, bidbuddy, etc...

We've heard horror stories about adwords accoutns being shut down for apparently no reason. We're wondering if the use of these tools, which may or may not automate certain processes can cause adwords accounts to be shut down without notice.

Any thoguhts?

TIA

I have not ever experienced it. The engines put limits on how much can be done how often but so they'll simply ignore API requests if you do them above the limits. Perhaps they might get PO'd if you keep hammering them when you shouldn't but the folks you mentioned won't do that.

Perhaps you may have heard about people who used to screen scrape the GUI interfaces which is a no-no and may get you in hot water.

Screen scrape is when you set up a script to act like a person using a browser. Before there were API's to the engines folks would just set up a script to go though the motions of logging in and setting bids and such by recording the path they would take with a browser. It's the same way folks spam message boards by the masses.

ah, thank you. And you're saying that the SE's are now ok with the API interfaces because they can limit the acccess one gets with it. As you say, they can block access to it?

Yes...they can limit the access AND the usage.
