Feedback and ideas for AdWords Editor specifically

There's tons of feedback for AdWords in general, and I thought it would be useful to start a thread on the AdWords Editor specifically. This tool has absolutely made my life easier, and I have a bunch of ideas on how to use it more effectively, and what could be done with it to make it even better...

So for starters, one of my favorite functionalities in the Editor software is the ability to add comments to individual keywords. This comes in very handy when you have hordes of campaigns and ad groups, and are trying to keep track of a subset of your keywords -- you can tag them (say, for example, your new global keyword additions that you want to make sure are priced right after they've been live a few days). The trick is, you can just select your whole account, and then sort by the comment column!

The downside is that you can't tag them in the Web 2.0 sense, or search for a particular comment, which would be really cool. Imagine if you could tag some keywords as "high cost risk" or "newly added" or "the client is making me do this one" and then search and sort based on that? Furthermore, if your comments could be uploaded into the web interface, that would be pretty slick.

Well, Pbiggs, I was pretty excited when I saw this thread, and was hoping that more folks would have weighed in by now.

I've just now copy/pasted your feedback in this week's advertiser feedback report - and will do the same for any other comments made this evening, or through next Wednesday as well (since I'll be out of the office Thursday and Friday for the holiday here in the US).

I'd love to see this thread floating toward the top of the page for the while - and will certainly make sure the right folks see the ideas/suggestions/comments/complaints posted here.

And welcome to WebmasterWorld, Pbiggs. Nice first post. ;)

I tried Adwords Editor when they first offered it, and it seemed kind of buggy - and the changes seemed like they took too long to implement.

However after reading PBiggs post - I am inspired to give it another try. I could use some more simplicity in my life.

I'll reiterate a few suggestions I made before -

- I'd like the same views available to me as are in the web interface; namely 'month to date' - right now all you get is yesterday, past 7 days, and last 30 days. Would like to see this month, last month, all time or best of all be able to customize my own date range.

- let me store my password in it!

- it needs to remember my preferred sort.

A few more...

- Ability to upload in same column format as CSV export download
- Ability to download, update or export only select campaigns or ad groups
- Find/Replace tools
- Ability to select "all languages"
- Ability to continue failed downloads at interrupted point
- Ability to only download select statuses - active only, all but deleted, etc.

I have an MCC account, but the AdWords-Editor only allows me to edit 2 out of 3 client accounts. Support has not yet answered :-(

What I'd need more than anything else is MOVING ads, keyword lists and whole ad-groups/campaigns between clients. My clients are branch offices of the same company, and it happens often that campaigns need to be moved. This is a real pain both with the web frontend as well as with the editor.

When entering bulk keyord lists, the editor should be able to understand [, " and "-". Actually all bulk operations are a bit cumbersome right now.

As much as I like the editor, right now I still prefer the web frontend.

Dang! Nice to see the activity here. Thanks very much.

I did add netmeg's feedback to the report, which I just sent - but failed to check back one more time before pressing the send key.

I'll pass the latest on to the AdWords Editor team later on Friday. ;)

Thanks again. I really get a kick of these feedback threads.

Ok, well I have a few,

-More Advanced URL Edit Options, to be able to, conditionally append to a URL with a series of prams, e.g. &cmp=[CampaignName]/[CampaignId]&agp=[AdgroupName]/[AdgroupId]&mt=[MatchType] ect.. Obvostley at a keyword level, the [KeyWord] pram would be pointless because it is covered by {KeyWord}

-To be able to bulk upload whole campaigns/ ad groups, that is adverts and keywords together! And to be able to upload a Google bulk download sheet straight into AE

I hope they make sence!

Hi,

A few quick ideas:

- being able to change all settings from within the app. For example setting ads to be displayed equally.

- using Google's own standards. Eg: case matching symbols

I have *many* more but it's Friday evening over here :-)

I believe, at this time, that the Find and Edit Keywords tool (and the other cross-campaign tools) do not work correctly with non-standard bidding options such as Position Preference.

So we'd love to see that working. :-)

I also love it. My main problem is that when I do the "get recent changes" it seems to reload everything . If this is not what it is doing, it seems to take an inordinate lengthof time - I hasten to add, my account is massive, so perhaps this is some of the problem. In fact, I am generally happy with its functionality - although I agree with anearlier posting re the ability to view figures for different parameters would be great.

I would love to be able to delete old deleted campaigns. Some of my campaigns have been deleted for ages, and the domains are no longer valid. I would love to have these removed, as I am sure a lot of the time I am uploading and downloaded deleted information - which is probably the bulk of my problems.

I have also noticed that while I am uploading and downloading - which can take several hours, a lot of other programmes I am running seem to lock or run extremely badly.

The new find and replace is fantastic - love it!

I use Adwords Editor for most of my work. It is a great tool! However, I do have a wish list of features to make me more productive:

If I select and copy records and then paste the records into excel, the fields are different. Try this under the keywords tab. You can only copy and paste 5 of the 9 available fields. This is particularly annoying because it prevents us from copying the information into excel to work with it to then re-upload it.

We should be able to upload third party conversion data for each keyword. Adwords doesn't provide a good mechanism to report offline conversions. This would be easy to implement and a huge competitive advantage relative to the other SEs.

We should have all the exporting options available through Adwords. We should also have an easier way to export keywords with no impressions. It would be very helpful if you stopped restricting how to export our data. For example, we really need to see keywords with zero impression in an Ad Group report, which is currently not available.

I would love to be able to see stats next to keywords and ad groups. I understand the system was not made for this, but seeing stats on impressions, CTR, clicks etc does help us quickly make improvements to the keywords and ad groups.

It would be good to be able to completely purge some of the old deleted stuff - this would obviously need a few "irreversible action" warnings, but would sure save time and resources.

My wishlist:

Ability to upload entire campaign (like the bulk upload) option so one doesn't have to paste in keywords and ads separately for large edits/creations.

Ability to create a new account under an MCC instead of logging in to create an account, then to the editor to upload the data.

Add GEO targeting functionality to the editor (radius/multi-map might be difficult; however, DMA based shouldn't be too difficult).

Thanks very much, everyone, for both the quality and quantity of your feedback. Much appreciated.

I included your early feedback in last week's Advertiser Feedback Report - and will do the same in this week's report (which goes out earlier than unusual, on Wednesday evening - due to the holiday here in the US.)

I've also just passed the URL to the entire thread along to the AdWord Editor team, so the right team folks are definitely hearing your comments. I hope you'll keep them coming!

Best,

AWA

PS: it's probably worth mentioning that I'll be away on both Thursday and Friday, due to the above mentioned holiday, and therefore not reading or posting.

url validator would be nice - make sure you don't put in a bad destination URL - perhaps show a thumbnail of the page?

page or url theme would be helpful ( i.e. the adsense preview tool) to help better group keywords with landing pages or tell you if your keywords don't match your landing pages well

would be nice to have a find replace to change keywords and ad destination urls at the same time - we use custom urls for each keyword so we have to update the keyword url and then update the text ad urls

AWA: Seems your feedback helped - today, all of a sudden, I was able to access the third MCC account from the editor (V2.0.0). However the "Save Password" option is still greyed out.

Thanks!

Hope everyone had a great holiday, for those of you celebrating Thanksgiving (thus my slow reply)! In addition to all the feedback above, here are some more additions/requests:

* Ability so save multiple custom views, not just limited to current custom filter (across accounts/clients too, not just for one account).

* Ability to filer list of campaigns (like in web interface, show only active campaigns, for example).

Great tool!
