I've talked to one or two experts on this subject - very interesting. Let me ask the masses of WebmasterWorld

Have you tried bidding for a specific position? Findings? Questions I have:

(lets assume we're bidding for position 3)
1. Does this kill your #1 ranked words -- will adwords move it down to 3? could your CPC go UP while your position drops? Or do good ads override the bid system.

2. Best ROI? #1, 3, 5, etc? IN MOST CASES (obviously there will be outliers) what has performed the clear cut best based on ROI? How about in lowering CPC? Does bidding down a few spots REALLY lower your cost, while barely hurting your conversions?

I have some other questions, but I'd love to hear what those with true experience have to say first.

I feel this is a very POWERFUL tool, if used correctly. If used improperly it could destroy an account - like mine!

I tried it for a few weeks.

It increased ROI tremendously.

Unfortunately it was Google's roi.

I've tried this with a few accounts.

With most of them it was disastrous.

With one account it was superb.

I never did understand why. Give it a try for a few days and see.

I've never gotten position preference to actually work. It seems like showing your ad in every position other than the precise positions that you specified is "expected behavior."
