Confusion on "ad performance history"

to what extent can I move my keywords around in my account

I've read so much on your keyword history's performance determining position, CPC, etc.

I've also learned that moving these keywords can reset their performance, which obviously will affect position, CPC, etc.

so how far can I go? These are huge implications here...resetting an ad could be terrible...couldnt it?

Or does it not mean all that much. The way I see it, why lose the history of an ad if you dont need to. Or why would you need to so bad that you have to come to this?

Thanks,

Hubes

Example Numero Uno:

Just found this in the adwords editor FAQ regarding cut/pasting adgroups into a new campaign:

Note: Your Ad Group's performance statistics, such as impressions and clicks, will not be transferred to the new location.

What does this mean?

My general rule is that "if it ain't broke - don't fix it"

If a keyword or AdGroup is performing well try to avoid any unnecessary edits - keep its history.

If something isn't performing well, then any history it may have is probably working against you - it could be good to lose it.

If you have been hit by the Quality Score high minimum bids, loosing the history would be a real bonus - but it's very difficult to do without changing the domain.

There seems to be a fine line here...

What determines if it would be good to clear this ad history? How about to KEEP it? How do I know, oh how do I know?

On one hand, I dont want to ruin a good thing. But what if there is a much, much better thing out there with a tweak? Is it all or nothing?

So:
1) If you know you have a problem, don't worry about the history. You have a problem & maybe losing the history would help.

2) If you believe you have a good position (this view may change over time) don't risk it by making changes - conduct your experiments will other pages, & other Ad groups.

3) You can't tell 1) from 2) Assume 2)

Ad copy has got history.

There was once when I was having a
very high CTR and over thousands of
click for the ad copy.

When I add another copy for testing.

The new ad copy actually when down to
3rd position. Whereas the ad copy with
long history remain no. 1, in the blue
Sponsored Links.
