Has anyone out there conducted any long term experiments on the ROI on showing ads in Google search and Google Network. There are a number of threads re the use of content network, just curious whether anyone does not show on the Google Network, and if so why.

Yes, I track this long term, short term and on an ongoing basis.

It will vary depending on many factors, so what happens to others isn't likely to be the optimum path for you. You'll have to experiment to learn how well you do and adjust your bids and other control factors from there.

As a guideline, I generally start with search only and run for several thousand clicks and at least a few dozen sales to figure out that my search network bids are close to their optimum (optimizing further on an ongoing basis. But with some search data in hand, I often then venture into content with my bids starting at 1/3rd my search bids. Thise content bids then are also adjusted as I monitor things. Sometimes I bump them up considerably from my 1/3rd start spot, sometimes down - just depends on how well I'm doing.

It's rare, but has happened, where my content bids (after tuning) end up higher than my search bids. So point is, try it, track it, adjust to suit your needs.

It seems to vary from niche to niche. Sometimes the content network can work very well and others it will make you very broke. You'll have to test it for yourself in the niche/niches you're in.

Thanks for the replies - however I think I may not have explained myself very well.

When you set up a campaign you can select Google search, Google Network, Content, and some other content one - can't remember the name. ie there are four check boxes. Has anyone tried not selected the second check box (which Google automatically checks for you) ie the Google Network box.

I find that i get almost zero clicks from the Content network actually

I hope its within the TOS to ask what kinda ctr % you guys expect from either search or content networks.

I am seeing a lot off impressions but very low click thru,

It is but don't expect meaningful answers as everybody's CTR will be very different. However in a majority of cases search CTR will be significantly higher than content CTR.

Right now I'm testing taking a few campaigns OUT of the Search Network and putting them back IN the Content Network.

In our area we found the amount fo traffic from the search network to be very low. And sometimes it was filled with those odd first thing of the morning high clicks so we dropped it after a little lesting both ways.
