I actually wrote a long posting however deleted it since I knew it would create a lot of controversy and would have been heavily moderated!

Tell me WHY US AdWorders pay much, much less than their counterparts in other countries?

Don't try and give me any philosophical-pseudo-economico-rationale, I need genuine, on-the-ground, reality.

Are so many US businesses so "strapped for cash" they really cannot afford advertising?

Answers on a postcard to...

Honestly, what is the problem?

A) Managers are always rewarded for good profits with low investments, in that situation their bonus grows. You are referring to having success of the corporate or personal food chain hierarchy. Profit with a conscience is not a real big virtue in the US economy.

B) The lure of arbitrage or quasi-arbitrage

C) Greed "greed is good" -Gorden Gecko, Wall Street example: Enron

Simply because the quality of the clicks is so low. It just doesn't pay to buy too much of these nearly worthless ads.

It's amazing advertisers pay as much as they do.

As a publisher I find that Spanish language versions of my pages pay considerably less eCPM than the identical pages in English--though they are still paying well.

This doesn't answer or contradict your premise precisely but it is a curious correlation.

Most of the Spanish traffic is from outside the US while about 60% of the English traffic is US.

In simple economic terms, the prices of things that are not scarce resources tend to go down.

On what data are you basing this statement?

There are many products and services that cost less in the US, just as they can be cheaper elsewhere.

Assuming the rates can be lower in for US-based advertisers, it sounds like an issue of what the market will bear, taking into consideration what similar services are available in particular countries.
