Adwords for Pro services eg. psychotherapy

Anyone know anyone doing this?

Just had a question out of the blue from an exceedingly reputable psychotherapist with a website who was inquiring about whether it would make sense to use adwords to advertise her services.

Seems like a low probability of success thing to me, but just wondering if any of you have any personal experience with this kind of thing, or suggestions.

Hi,

In theory this should be a candidate for one of the "local search" types that G supports.

However, I think that ads with a very limited potential phyisical catchment area are harder to get right. How can we know that her potential clients use the Web/G/etc? Maybe get some client demographics from her and compare it with G's for example.

(I tried running ads for a local pub, but guess what, its customers were already using their free time to knock back the ale rather than search G...)

But, I suggest that you just try it for a month with a smallish budget. You never know.

Of COURSE potential clients will be consulting "Dr. Google"! ;) (This seems confirmed by the accidently-released AOL search data...)

I'd start with a through review with your client of advertising ethics and regulation in their profession, which I assume they are already familiar with.

Don't forget to target relatives. Use keywords like "son", "daughter", "husband", "wife", etc.

Hi jtara!

Well, I hadn't thought of that, true, but AOL customers' neuroses/etc may not be representative.

Excellent point: much more heavily regulated than pubs, especially if those ads might accidentally stray out of the region for which this person is accredited.

Not quite the same profession but we have been running a campaign for a psychic with very good results. Already generated press coverage as well as business after a month and a half. It is a locally targeted campaign.

Also had success with local garden designer, accountants, solicitors etc

Thanks, folks. The regulation issue is one I'd thought of. This isn't a client of mine, but I'll forward the issues you folks brought up.

I'm sure the cost to experiment would be relatively low, and coupled with some good material on her website, it might have some potential. The positive side is that a long term paying client for therapy brings signficant money, so the ROI could be high, if it generates anything at all.
