I'm looking into adwords. I've been looking at the keywords I could use and they are between £0.04 and £0.91.

Is it generally better to go for more of the £0.04 keywords and that one £0.91 keyword?

I have a very small budget - as my site is generally a hobby site.

Also it is better to go for one keyword:

Widgetworld (£0.49)

or two:

Maps of Widgetworld (£0.45)

The trick for surfers to convert well on your site is to use tightly targetted keywords.

These keywords will be generally 'cheap blue twisted widgets' rather than 'widgets'. There will be far fewer searches on the first but if your site targets this category, they will convert better than the broad match. It will be cheaper also.

Some judicious use of the negative keyword filter will also help in optimising a small budget.

So you'd recommend using

Exact Match

as my keyword matching option?

Also I'm assuming a negative keywords for a travel website on a specific country - would be to use:

-usa -uk -hong kong ?

Exact Match - Yes.. It should convert well.

Also try the content network with much lower bids. Sometimes they convert well .. It needs a little luck, I guess. Good for 'small budgets'..

Sorry - ignorance here - whats the content network?

Edit: Just found -

[adwords.google.com...]

Says about targetting to specific countries. Am assuming this is what you mean.

Thanks

You have the possibility of your ads showing on

: Google SEARCH Network
: Goggle Partner Network
: Google Publisher (Content) network.

You get to choose, what you want, through the adWords interface.

The ads that show up on various websites is the 'Content network'.

You can bid seperately for the SEARCH and CONTENT. CONTENT is significantly cheaper.

No.. That is Geo Targetting. Target your ads only in countries where you can convert. Donot waste your budget for click thrus. from countries which cannot or will not convert for your niche. This is a very common newbie mistake.

Thanks for all your advice Grass.

I'm assuming all these will be options when I sign up for adwords. I don't need to sign up to anything else as well?

:)

If you have not yet signed up, do look for some free coupons from Google. You may find a starter coupon for USD 50 or more free credit. Go looking now...
