I've got one keyword which shows as ranking around 6.
It consistently doesn't show up until the middle of the 3rd page.
Another keyword which is ranked about 20 (competitive field), also shows on the 3rd page - where I'd expect it.
I've noticed this for at least the last week or so - so I don't think it's just a case of google playing around with things in the short term.
I've checked on other keywords - some seem to show up where I'd expect them to - others not. My traffic's been down as of late - and I'm wondering if there's a relation...
Am I missing something here?
Anyone? (AWA?)
Is this the stats for one particular day or is it the all time stats? Check the data for one week or one month and see if the number is same.
>>> exact query, geo targeting (country and/or region)
Possible. Very much possible. But I would expect to see the avg position as 1.3 or 1.8, not 1.0.
>>> I click estimate traffic
hehehe.. Now this tool is as useful as a bike to a fish. The numbers are generally wrong. I'm sure the PHDs there can make a better tool if AWA asks them to.
>>> I set my bid to $0.05 and I am several pages down. I set my bid to $5
$0.05 is probably a little too low while $5.00 is a little too high. Why not set a bid price based on the avg conversion rate of your website? If you do not know the conversion rate, go to Overture and see how much the top 3 advertisers are paying per click. Divide the top bids by 2 or 3 and set that as your max CPC to start off with.
I still keep getting a 1.x avg pos. When I go check I am on the second page. I am at $0.50 to get that.
I believe, that the position is calculated (based on CPC and CTR) for all possible factors combined together: exact query, geo targeting (country and/or region) and language. That means you may by sixth when searching from the USA in English, but first when searching from e.g. Austria in German.
It is entirely possible that, when an advertiser targets the entire world (or must many different countries) that the ad can appear toward the top of the page in one country's competitive market, and on another page entirely in another country's competitive market. In your stats, you are seeing 'Average Position' over all your impressions, for a given date range, wherever they have occurred. For this reason, it is quite possible to see an Average Postion higher on the page than the actual position in which you appearing in a particular country*.
And as vibgyor79 points out, be sure to be aware of your date range.
I also feel some confusion in this thread as to whether we are referring to actual stats, or figures generated by the Traffic Estimator. I think a little of both, depending on the post.
It's worth remembering that the Traffic Estimator is giving you just that: an estimate of traffic. On the other hand, your stats tell you exactly what actually happened during a particular date range.
For this reason it is much better to rely on your actual stats rather than an estimate, when monitoring position, performance, clicks-per-day, cost, etc.
*(BTW, if it is especially important to be able to track positon in a particular country, then it is may be worth considering to create a seperate campaign for that country alone.)

I'm not sure if you've got the whole AdWords bidding and ad positioning concept right. This guy might be paying $0.50 for a click and still be above you - the ad positioning also depends on the CTR of this advertiser's broad match keyword.
>>>> I bid for [kw1 kw2 "kewword phrase" country] as an exact match
If you want to beat this competitor without paying a bomb, put that keyword in the title and body of the ad copy. Wait for a week or two. Once your CTR is 'established', you will either see your ad position improve or your CPC go down.
