I’m intending to market my product – an e-book that sells for $29 - primarily with Google Adwords, reason being because for my main keyphrase the organic search listings are pretty competitive, but there are no Adwords corresponding to my main keyphrase – zero.

So in this case, is regular site optimization also important, or can you just rely almost entirely on Adwords?

I would do both. Organic SEO takes time and AdWords may help your sales for the 4-6 months that it will take to rank well in the natural results.

If you can, start up an affiliate program and let the affiliates do the SEO work for you.

Hi ticadel1,

Welcome to Webmaster world.

I'm going to take an slightly different tack here just 'cause that statement seems almost opposed. It's a bit unusual to find phrases that are very competitive in the organic results and not at all in Adwords.

It might turn out that the organic SERPs are not as competitive as it looks at first blush and that a bit of basic SEO will easily bring you to the top. Or, you might have stumbled upon some overlooked Adwords keyphrases that can be mined for gold.

Either way, to me it sounds like a situation where you should work both ends, check the results, tweak and tune, etc. Looks like you have some interesting work ahead of you.

You may also be in category that Google doesn't like. For example firearms. The organic SERP are very competative, but Google doesn't allow Adwords for these topics. It might be worth a email to support before you devote much time or money to a campaign that may be disapproved.
