Bit of a newbie on adwords... so I hope you'll forgive what may be simple question: what is the difference between the top banner of a google search (often shaded with a purple background) and the side ads? Just wondered if anyone could help. Are they all part of the adwords campaign, if so do Google put the highest paying bidder at the top to increase their revenue - or is it a different scheme completely? TIA

They put the highest ranked ad (which may NOT be the highest bidder) who ALSO meets an undisclosed max bid threshold.

You have to bid high to get it.

It is a very good position for us (might not be for all business modesl). The CTR is much higher there.
In many business models however, the ROI might be lower.

Well, nyet beat me to it. Was just getting ready to respond to this thread.

One thing though - the info quoted above is not really correct. The ads that go to the top do have to meet an additional performance standard, but it is not related to Max CPC. Instead, it is related to CTR.

In other words, the ads that go to the top are sent there because they are more relevant to Google users, not because they have a higher Max CPC.

Also, actual CPC is weighted rather than Max CPC in terms of going to the top. This is different than the ads on the right hand side where positioning is determined by Max CPC x CTR.

Your welcome nyet.

I wanted to get to this thread fast, before eWhisper responded with lightening speed - quoting just the right past thread and post! :)

BTW, this 'evergreen' topic has been a part of many threads in the past months - so a site search might net you some additional details and discussion.

''evergreen''?

Sorry about that! US slang for 'everlasting'.

Meaning the topic of Top Placement is everlastingly interesting to AdWords advertisers in general and WebmasterWorld members in particular!
