Wondering if you place an adwords ad and you are using an affiliate link to a merchants site:

Would it generally be true that if the particular merchant does a good job with sales conversions, that the competition for keywords will already be so heavy, that to get top 4 positioning is unlikely unless willing to spend a lot/click? This is a general question.

If you try to bid high enough to get in the top-4 listings for competitive keywords and phrases as an affiliate you will in most cases lose your shirt.

The key is to buy highly targeted keywords, bit very low, and get massive volume by buying lots of keywords that get a few clicks here and there.

You can buy a lot of low volume KWs that together make up a lot of searches. There are quite a few terms with 0-2 bidders for the terms.

Whenever I'm searching for something, and input a query that returns less than 1-2 results, I usually jot the term down to keep a record of these for future consideration.

Like everyone said, use terms everyone else isn't using... it will ad up to a lot of clicks and hopefully a lot of money for you. It all depends on your keywords and how smart you are in choosing them..

Thanks for above. But as an affiliate for a merchant with say hosting or internet access services, it at least seems for a newbie that "all" the targeted keywords are already competitive. If all the logical keywords are being bid on and many pros are hunting down the keyword scraps that others hadn't taken, and assuming hundreds and hundreds of players, it seems like a unlikely scenario to arrive upon the scene and get a hold of new or other keywords to generate clicks with. Logical or what am I missing?

Maybe all the competitive KWs are being bid upon, not sure anyone knows.

However, there are still many good KWs out there that no one is bidding on. Remember, everyday there is a new product or service, and thus new KWs.

Every week I add a few KWs with 0 other bidders. Some of these KWs only bring in a few clicks/week, and others might be 100+. However, they are all $0.05/click, and together add up to a decent number.

This is where a separation between a winner and a loser is taken place. Sometimes you can not distinguish the quality of a click which costs $0.05 to $5.00. However, this may not last long if someone is following you. And you move on to the next.

Hosting and net access are probably the toughest to make a profit on by using AdWords straight to affiliate sites. Have played around a little in that arena but never with success.

In addition to the keyword research finding niche products/services is key as well. Anything from flower bulbs and candy to ROI tracking services, financial services, and specialized videos can be profitable if ya can find the right programs and take the time to dig up the hidden keywords.

Web Hosting is very competitive. There are thousands of services out there fighting for new customers so it will be very hard to make a large profit quick unless you have some real skills.

Try to advertise something that isn't as crowded.
