I looked in the FAQ:

[adwords.google.com...]

Didn't find what I wanted...

How does Google define 'daily' and from when to when is a daily budget?

If I just launched a campaign at 7PM EST with a $300 daily budget would the daily budget be a literal 24 hours, or does the day end at midnight Pacific time, or what?

I don't really want to spend $300, but rather $75 or so for the next 8 hours this evening and then again tomorrow evening.

Google recommended a daily budget of $310...

I will monitor the stats until I go to bed figuring a lag time...then lower my 'daily budget' when I go to bed depending on how things are going.

Any better ideas on how to accomplish a 'pop' evening/early AM then trickle down to almost no expense?

TIA

"Daily" means the 24 hour day, beginning a split second after midnight PST.

The day would end at midnight PST.

I'd advise being careful about setting your daily budget higher than you're really comfortable paying. This can result in some unpleasant 'surprises' (which really shouldn't be a surprise at all - as the AdWords system assumes when you say $300.00/day you really mean $300.00/day, and tries to deliver that).

As an aside, IMO, changing one's daily budget many times per day can create problems, due to server delays - and the complexity that frequent budget changes create in ones billing pages.

Thanks for replying AWA:

OK, that is actually good news.

So, does the system take into account that there is only 5 more hours left for today's daily budget campaign?

Meaning, if one sets a daily budget of $100 at 11PM PST that should give pretty good positions with just 1hr left, correct?

The total cost thus far is $27.85 since 7PM...3+ hours ago with an average position of 1.5 overall. 10:20PM as I write this.

I haven't changed my daily budget yet...it's still $310.

I understand what you mean about setting the budget higher than I want. I don't think I'd keep an average position of 1.4 across 31 Ad groups if I put it to what I actually wanted to spend though.

Google is geared to a full day of advertising...not sure how else to attain a high average position across so many Ad groups with a $75 budget. ;)

So...at 3AM EST the daily budget would be refreshed to whatever I had as the daily budget at that time.

Hmm. I may reach $75 before I go to bed.

Thanks...

You will often find that there is delays in the data, so to attempt to manage to the level you suggest is going to be hugely difficult.

I suppose the obvious question is if you get good results in the evening then you ought to make sure that your ads show 100% of the time.

It may be that the better option is to pause the ads when you don't want to be shown, and ensure you have the maximum budget for the times you are showing. The estimate is for a 24 hour period, so it stands to reason that you'll spend less than that anyway.

However, I am not a fan of pausing/resuming as it has a detrimental impact on CTR.

Thanks for the reply. I ended styaing up late anyway.

Knowing there is a lag time, I paused it at around $70 or so but I can't recall..and when the dust settled the campaign came in at $80 and change.

I just started it again with Googles recommended budget of $220.00

AdWords is painfully slow tonight.

I'm pretty happy, overall with AdWords. My average CPC has been 8 and 9 cents I've gotten about 1000 new vistors to very targetted pages.

This site is also a web forum, so just getting new people to join is good.
