hi,
I am an adwords newbie , started yesterday .
The ads were slowed and i got a warning.
Tried a new ad today but no one clicks . Offering 3 dollars per click but still no help.
The ad is for a travel destination "mars"
Company Name
Questions on Mars Travel
Free Answers from our Experts

the trigger word is exact phrase match "mars travel information "
Any clues on what i could try...should try..must not try.
Thanks
Niko

I'd get the company name out of the title. Put "mars travel information" in the title or some variation of it. That will help get the attention of the person searching much more effectively than the name of the company.

Hello I am an adwords newbie as well, but I think that you need to add some more keyphrases to your campaign...if you want exact matching then try to figure out some more combinations of what folks would type in to get your type of web site information...

something like:

mars tourist attractions
tourist attractions mars
tourism mars
mars tourism
travel info mars
mars travel info
etc etc.

Then you can see which phrases works best and juggle the campaign from there.

also if you have some specific info about mars you can set up different sets of key phrases in your account and send folks to those specific areas of your web site
with different URLs.

Skibum is also correct..check that the wording is appealing... and says just what people want to see.

This thread I think is a very good read if you are brand new to adwords:

And don't forget to read the library [webmasterworld.com]

Try using exact phrase matching.

Broad term matches usually are all to broad.

If you sell blue widgets then setup your keywords as:

[blue widgets]
[blue widgets for sale]
[where to find blue widgets]
[blue widget info]
[blue widget shopping]
[blue widget resources]

Often people will search for something that fits your broad match but has nothing to do with it.

Using exact matches and optimizing your pay also seems to rank your ad higher up then those just paying big bucks for whatever clicks they can get.

thanks for the referances and the help..I have exact phrase on, but now I don't think I need adwords any more... so, whereas it has been a fun experience I would like to bail..

BUT here is a question!

what happens if you have set a budget, but bail? do you get charged the amount set or only the clicks?

Exact focus helped. i am presently trying to be cautious to check performance.
There is something that is popping up in my mind...imagine a scenario when no advertiser can generate the min CTR. What are the possibilities in such a case.
Thanks
Niko
The thread was excellent specially the part on going real slow in adding groups so as to avoid CTR penalty

Pause or better yet delete the campaign. It should stop showing in an hour or so.

What?! But the fun is just beginning! ;)

You'll only pay for the clicks that you've actually received, regardless of your daily budget.

One important note though: because you are billed after you've received the clicks, there will usually be a follow up bill after you have deleted your campaigns.

This billing covers the clicks you've received in the time period between your last billing and the time you stopped everything.

:) Thanks for that AWA... I do have another question as well... that particular first try was a trial and I didn't now what to do about setting the date for expiry of the campaign. If the trial is for one month and the date set is x date..and it switches off - is a re-activation fee charged on it if I wanted to start it up again?

Hey excell, does this mean you might stay with it? ;)

If the trial is for one month and the date set is x date..and it switches off - is a re-activation fee charged on it if I wanted to start it up again?

Nope - you only pay the activation fee once. So if you re-set your end date to be in the future, your ads will run again, and you do not pay anything to make it happen.

BTW, another way to do the same thing is to simply 'Pause' your ads, then 'Resume' them when you are ready to start again. No fee to do this either.

And I know you didn't ask this, but many newer advertisers do: you also do not pay an activation fee when you create new campaigns, new Ad Groups, new ads, or new keywords.

So whether you create one campaign with one Ad Group, runing on one keyword - or 25 campaigns with many hundreds of Ad Groups and thousands of keywords, the same $5.00 covers it.

OK.. I thought that would be the case - I read all the info and couldn't clearly understand that point. I did however understand about setting up various groups etc. and how it all works in general.

Will I be an adwords customer in the future?, most likely. I found it to be extreme fun and enjoyed watching it and playing with it :)

>>mars travel information<<

If you really have something like travel information in your keyphrase, just these two words can increase the cost for your clicks.
Travel related keywords are very expensive IMO.
Use exact match [] for this expensive keyphrase and find more desccriptive phrases/keywords that you could get for less.

Good luck
