Adwords conversion tracking

How does it work out the conversion rate?

Hi, I recently started up an Adwords campaign. I uploaded the free conversion tracker and am now a bit muddled with how it works.

With the first 2 clicks it says I have a conversion rate of 50%. How was this figure worked out? The sales haven't increased since starting the ad (large customised b2b software, so I know when a sale takes place) and requests-for-information haven't taken place.

So, how can google say that one of the first two people clicking on the advert was a conversion when I know for a fact that they weren't?

Sorry to bump but I really am stuck with this and after sending google an e-mail haven't had a reply yet

Alternatively, if this topic has already been covered, could someone be kind enough to point me to the thread

Hi Sandy & welcome

When you have an Adwords campaign there is the option to download a free conversion tracker** which should tell you exactly how many of the people who click on one of your ad's are making sales/requsting information.

I don't know how it works though (hence this thread)

** look at the top of the campign management page where it says 'cnversion tracking'

Sorry, just figured it out. The tracker was put on the front page, not the conversion page it should have been on

This brings up another question though:

Out of my first 3 clicks only 2 were conversions. How could this be possible seeing as all 3 people were taken to the same page and simply landing on that page registered them as conversions?

Did one of them close the window before it had time to load or did his PC crash mid-transfer? Or does Google choose in someway who are conversions and who aren't?

Looks like you haven't installed the code properly. The code has to be installed on the page that the customer gets after they purchase your B2B software ('thank you' page).

If I put the google conversion code on my "thank you" page, does the code know the difference between someone who came to my site via another method (non adword) and makes a purchase versus those that come from adword ads and then make a purchase?

If the code gets applied every time the "thankyou" page is loaded after a sale, I'm not sure how it knows if the sale was from a adword customer or not.

The logic/algo is that Google starts tracking folks from the point when they clicked on your ad on Google or any of their network partners. Once on your site, Google follows the visitors click behavior and if they end up on your thank you/confirmation page, Google attributes that successful action as a conversion.

The issue I have with that is currently the system cannot track individual products hence all products are lumped into the conversion heap.

I also noticed its possible for the conversions/actions taken on your site, to be a lot higher than what Google is able to track - alas the limitation of Javascripts.

Hope this helps.

Does it continue to track the user when they are passed off to another site for the actual purchase.

For example on my site, if someone adds something to their cart another browser window pops open going to the "purchasefriend" website cart. Then the person can purchase the item and complete the sale. Once the sale is complete, the "purchasefriend" page loads my "thankyou" page which contains the google script.

Will google track the new browser window opening, the purchase, and then the thankyou page to properly track the conversion?

Thanks again,
jeff
