Accuracy of Estimate Traffic

Is Estimate Traffic of any use? I found some misleading results.

In order to see what I can expect from my bids I often click the "Estimate Traffic" button. I used this tool to eliminate keywords with bad or expensive results.

Now I found that this tool doesn't work for me. The estimations are completely wrong and the results are misleading.

Example:
Estimated traffic:
[keyword a] : 84 clicks/day
[keyword b] : 8 clicks/day

Real traffic over 3 days:
[keyword a] : 24 impressions/0 clicks
[keyword b] : 90 impressions/2 clicks

According the estimations I expected much more traffic.

How can I get more impressions/better results for [keyword a]?

Check your estimated position of the ad. If it's off the first page you will likely get lower impressions and certainly lower CTR.

As a separate exercise, try experimenting with different ads to increase the CTR.

engine,

Actual estimations today:
[keyword a]: 69 clicks/day, position 2,0
[keyword b]: 8 clicks/day, position 3,9

Estimated clicks/day for [keyword a] have been fallen from 84 to 69.

Why do I get better results for [keyword b]. Shouldn't [keyword a] be much better?

The only other difference I can see is that [keyword a] is much cheaper than [keyword b].

In addition, looking at Overture's keyword suggestion tool I can see that much more people are searching for [keyword a], so the many impressions [keyword a] should receive to get 69 daily clicks seems to be a bit unrealistic. But how does G estimate the traffic?

There are other issues here:
Better qualified traffic is finding the ad for [keyword b]

What is the ROI looking like?
Are you getting more clicks but more tyre kickers for one and not the other?

Finally, take the measurements over time as they may be affected by seasonal, weekend, or weather-related factors, etc., in a short time frame.
