Google have a special status i think, that if you screw around too much with an ad, it will be tripped. It means that someone at google need to manually review your ad.

This state is not shown from the interface. You can usually get it resolved by emailing adwords support.

You can normally trip it by e.g.

Make small change to existing ad.
Change it back

a couple of times

Also it's nice to know that, if you make changes to an ad, it gets removed from their distribution network until they can hand review the advert again to make sure it's compliant with their guidelines. :)

So I usually change ads only when necessary, and try to set it up as close to "perfect" when starting out a new ad campaign.

This hasn't been my experience, unless they are real fast doing it. I just made some changes to my ads and when I was checking out other words (to see if they were autocorrecting all the misspellings) I saw my changes. This was within a few minutes time.

I have seen both cases, from not being on content sites for several days to updates in a few hours. I guess it depends on the google staff's workload.

While we are on the topic, is there a strategy to get around long lead times, like creating a very similar adgroup first, then change your ad and your other group takes care of the traffic while they review the main ad?

Any suggestions?

They are *very* fast at doing the reviews, but it's important to keep in mind. The ads stay on Google.com proper, but they do get pulled from distribution (eg, AOL, Earthlink, Ask Jeeves) until they are reviewed again.

Use different ad groups, as always, you get better results than if you only have one ad group. I use one per keyword "set" which tends to work well enough, that way the ad copy reflects the keywords you are bidding on.

At the outset, if possible, it's good to create two or more ads per group - depending on the impressions expected, to see which advert will get the better CTR.

So, ya - I would say have similar ad groups, so if you need to edit one, the others stay live, and you aren't without a source of paid traffic at any given time.
