I think there is one for big earners. I see lots of companies customize their ads differently. Big example I can think of is Sedo parking pages.

I think Sedo parking pages are part of google's DomainPark program, which is separate from Adsense.

what would an adsense API let you do? I think premium publishers get "special features" .. but is that an API?

Apparently there is one.. I just read some roumors saying that it's possible to fetch the ads in XML format.

Premium publishers have an API but all the technically challenged unwashed masses probably aren't getting one anytime soon.

XML has always been there, just don't use it if you value your AdSense account.

You can see an example of it in use on the 'AdSense Sandbox' web site and it's use there is virtually the same as the AdSense Preview tool.
