i assume that flash ads will be considered image ads, and therefore, if you have image ads turned off, they wont appear. i wonder if google will allow publishers to keep image ads but turn off animations.

They added flash ads to the lineup back in April.

i suppose then, that google considers april to be a 'new addition'.

...We accept image ads (.JPEG, .PNG, .GIF), as well as Flash (.SWF), which is a new addition.

this is from the 13 october 2005 posting from the adwords blog. sorry about the incorrect info.

They started with a small group of advertisers who were using Flash back in April. It must have gone to a wider release this month.

Where do I signup to block those ads? My site is annoying enough as it is.

AFAIK, you cannot just block flash ads, although I have not had a problem with them on any of my own sites. If you are having problems with them being served, check with AdSense support, but the only way might be to opt-out of image ads completely.

Has anybody had any major success stories with the image ads compared to the text ads? I've been afraid to "turn them on".

Perhaps a stupid question but here goes.

If G serves a Flash ad to your page and that person does not have macromedia Flash installed on their computer does that mean a box will pop up saying you need to install macromedia flash or will that not happen?

And if that does happen does G have the technology to recognise that a reader does not have it installed and instead of the warning popping up automatically G serves instead a text or other form of image ad?

I ask this because I hate it when I am asked to install anything and it means an instant close browser or back button most of the time.

I hope not annoying flash ads.

Some are so much hurting the eyes, that I leave a site only for the annoying flash ads.

Also I have some pages with critic about annoying ads, would be very painful, when at this pages would be an annoying flash ad.

can we speculate that only few of the publishers have image ads enabled?
no one speaking about problems with image ads, but everyone saying their text ads don't fit to the content etc.

i tried image ads long time ago for about two weeks. they didn't work out for me.
are they still balanced partly in cpc? if so, i would not turn them on. image ads are branding in large part. don't forget they have a visual impact on the viewer. flash can be like a promotional film. image/film ads need to be balanced in cpm to give the publisher fair results.

i still think image ads are a flop.
the latest gimmick: annoying big block text ads and huge font size. almost looks like an image ad, but crappier. hey, i have opted out of image ads! would be a great feature if they let us publishers adjust font style/size.

I followed AdSenseAdvisor's suggestion to turn on image ads. After a couple of weeks of diminished earnings, I went back to text only. The image ads may well work on some sites, and experimentation remains key - but they don't work on every site.
