Are link units impressions counted?

I have this simple doubt:
Each time an ink unit is showed in my site, is that counted as "impression"?
Or does the visitor have to click the link unit to show the actual ads to count as impression?
Or does it count double, once when the link unit is shown plus one moretime when the ads are shown?

To clarify, an ad unit impression is counted each time a link unit is shown. A page impression is counted each time one of your users clicks on one of the link unit topics and related ads are displayed.
